As a natural blond, dealing with unwanted facial hair has—happily—never been an issue for me. I’ve never had to wax my upper lip or worry about peach fuzz on my cheeks. Even my brows can go for weeks (OK, months) without seeing a tweezer and still look acceptable. Point being, I never thought I’d see significant benefits from dermaplaning—until I tried Dermaflash 2.0 ($189).
Make no mistake: Dermaplaning, and this tool, are nothing like shaving your face. While yes, the handheld tool does remove peach fuzz, it also works as an effective exfoliator. The angled blade, coupled with sonic pulses, takes off both hair and dead, dry cells on the top layer of your skin, leaving it softer, smoother and more radiant.
Scared to take a blade to your face? I get it. I can barely file my own nails, so the idea of at-home dermaplaning was mildly anxiety-inducing. But Dermaflash 2.0 could not be easier to use. The second iteration of the device, this version comes pre-charged and already loaded with a disposable blade (it’s also very aesthetically pleasing and looks more like an Apple device than a skin care tool). There’s also no wrong way to use it; it works at any angle and from any direction—simply press the blade against your skin, turn it on and move it in short strokes across your entire face. While there are two speeds, I found the lower one to be totally sufficient. In less than five minutes, my skin looked and felt noticeably smoother, softer and more even, and my ensuing makeup went on better than ever. Also worth noting: You can actually see all the hair, skin and other grime on the edge of the device afterward. A little bit gross, yes, but very satisfying.
The set comes with four additional blades—be sure to use each one only once, for hygiene purposes—and is touted as a weekly treatment (a pack of additional four blades will run you $29). While using it weekly initially seemed like it would be too much work, after seeing the results, this has definitely earned a spot in my “Skincare Sunday” lineup.
