When you think of bold color, unabashed confidence and deeply personal style, you think of Cher. The stunning star has never been shy when it comes to showing her true colors through her makeup, hair and fashion. She recently teamed up with Saweeetie for a new MAC Cosmetics campaign called Challenge Accepted. MAC seems like a natural collaboration for Cher as she’s always been passionate about makeup—she even made some as a child.

“When I was younger, at one point, I was making my own makeup. I probably could have killed myself if I kept going,” Cher told Vanity Fair. “I wanted this piercing blue, and I made it in a double boiler. I don’t even remember what I made it out of. It was fabulous, but I’m sure everything was carcinogenic!”

Cher was surrounded by makeup from a young age. She shared with Vanity Fair that her mother was a model, and she lived with three other women in the house who were also models. “I used to sit quietly in the corner and watch them put on their makeup,” said Cher. “It was kind of a meditation for me.”

She went on to do her own makeup on Sonny & Cher and her solo show Cher. Eventually, she began working with Leonard Engelman. He did her makeup for many years before she returned to doing it herself during her later shows. “I did my show makeup because I knew how to do it well, and it was colorful—and you could make mistakes,” she said.
