From well-curated statement pieces to some very specific direction from celebs themselves, hairstylists from the team at Mane Addicts share the inspiration and backstories on the boldest, biggest, most memorable and meaningful looks they’ve created.

Kathleen Riley

“One of the most iconic looks I’ve ever done was the super long rope braid on Sofia Richie for her 21st birthday in Vegas. We wanted to do something polished but dramatic, and it went perfectly with the occasion and her outfit. The pony was 60 inches! Definitely a statement.”

“This idea came from the amazing Chris Appleton, who allowed me the opportunity to create the braided style on Jennifer Lopez.”

“The inspiration for Beyoncé’s look was Black culture. She loves braids, and she’s always on board for us to get as creative as we can get with them!”

“This look is just classic Joan Collins. She wanted to feel like herself and she did just that!”

Irinel de Leon

“I did Sunisa Lee’s hair for the last Met Gala. We had some fun with it; I added tons of length and gold cording at the base of the ponytail. Her dress was very symmetrical, so I wanted to keep the pony polished and full, and have it move nicely on the carpet. I ran all around New York to find the perfect gold accessories for the base. I ended up finding this just – right cording with mini gold balls at a ribbon store, which also had a specialty button section in the back, where I grabbed large gold buttons that matched the exact ones from her dress. I adorned it with cording by layers and three large gold buttons to the base of the pony as well!”

Emma Willis

“As soon as I saw Giuliana’s dress for the Golden Globes this year, I knew the hair had to be up or off the neck area. I didn’t think an updo was the right vibe, so we went with this faux bob, which was cute and fun, cool and stylish. She loved it.”

“JoJo Fletcher was wearing a top with ruffled edges for the show she’s hosting, which gave me the quick idea to create a ‘wave and texture’ wet look. It was a look that she’s never done before, and honestly, when I told her what I had in mind, she flat-out said: ‘No Emma; I’m going to look like a wet dog.’ But, after trusting me to do my thing, this was one of her absolute favorite looks.”
