CBD in beauty is no new phenomena, but as we learn more about how cannabinoids work within our body, the interest in CBD-infused self-care and wellness products continues to increase. While cannabidiol (CBD) is mostly known for its soothing and restorative properties, a new study just found that CBD might be more impactful in the skin than we thought when it comes to skin aging and sun damage.
JAAD’s CBD Study Finds the Ingredient Can Protect Against Sun Damage
This week, the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatologists published the findings of a new study that followed the impacts of topically applied nano-CBD (nCBD) cream on users, examining the difference in the amount of sun damage accrued after participants underwent UV exposure with a CBD cream versus without, and the results are shocking.
According to the conclusion of the JAAD’s study, “Topically applied nCBD cream reduced UVA-induced formation of a frequent mutagenic nuclear DNA base lesion and protected against mtDNA mutations associated with UVA-induced skin aging.”
What does that mean? Essentially, the findings suggest that the use of topical CBD cream can prevent UVA-induced nuclear and DNA damage, thus reducing the skin aging process. JAAD notes that “this trial is the first to identify UV-protective capacity of CBD-containing topicals in humans,” and while the news is exciting, it’s important to continue vigilant sun protection with SPF to ensure healthy, cancer-free skin.
