Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, but it can also bring about changes in the body, especially the skin. One area that undergoes a big transformation is the belly bump. As the baby grows, the skin stretches, making it more susceptible to dryness, itchiness, and stretch marks. To address these concerns, belly facials have emerged as a popular, self-care prenatal ritual. Pregnancy facials, or prenatal facials, are a moment of relaxation, but more importantly, they also treat stressed out skin. Among the benefits, a belly facial help diminish stretch marks, but more importantly they offer mom a rare moment of relaxation.

What Are Some Body Changes That Occur During Pregnancy?

Lydia Sarfati, founder and CEO of Repêchage, emphasizes the significance of adopting a holistic approach to wellness and skin care, particularly during pregnancy, for the well-being of both mother and child. Sarfati points out various skin conditions that may arise during pregnancy, such as stretch marks, extreme dryness, hyperpigmentation and Linea nigra—a dark line developing on the stomach due to hormonal changes. Sarfati asserts, “Skin is the window to your inner wellness.” She emphasizes that skin reflects what’s happening internally, highlighting the importance of addressing any skin concerns that arise.

Certified birth doula and pre-and post-natal yoga instructor, Ires Wilbanks CD, says, “It’s not that your belly is getting bigger, your whole body is changing.” She highlights the significant hormonal shifts during pregnancy, stating, “There are massive increases in estrogen and blood volume is increased by 1000 percent.” Wilbanks stresses the interconnectedness of nourishing the body, mind, and psychological states, asserting, “How we are nourishing our bodies, our mental and psychological states all impact our physiology.” She underscores the importance of self-care, noting “The body and skin manifest what is happening internally, so you need to provide your body and mind with support.”

What Does a Baby Belly Facial Include?

A baby belly facial is tailored to the unique needs of expectant moms. The key benefits include restoring skin hydration, improving elasticity, reducing discomfort from pregnancy-related skin changes, and potentially preventing stretch marks. Celebrity aesthetician Veronica Barton Schwartz says keeping the delicate skin on the belly moisturized is key to preventing stretch marks. “Use lotion or cream daily to keep your skin moisturized. This helps relieve itchy skin during pregnancy whether you have stretch marks or not,” she says.

“I love belly facials for pregnant moms,” says celebrity aesthetician Nerida Joy. She advocates for the use of natural oils like evening primrose oil, aloe vera oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil and vitamin E for belly massages. “Massaging these oils into the skin daily on the stomach, breast, and groin area will definitely help prevent stretch marks and keep the skin flexible, hydrated and healthy.”

How Are Belly Facials Done?

Belly facials typically begin with gentle cleansing to remove impurities and prepare the skin for further treatment. Exfoliation will slough off dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. The next step involves massage, which helps improve circulation, relieve tension, and facilitate better absorption of skin-care products. Finally, the belly is moisturized with nourishing creams or oils to hydrate and protect the skin. Joy suggests, “Start early in the pregnancy with a light oil and gentle massage pressure to keep the skin nourished and protected.”

“Gently massage with warmed seaweed-based natural oil such as the Repêchage Nutrí Oil,” suggests Sarfati. She highlights its blend of Laminaria Digitata Extract and natural oils and recommends using a Kansa Wand, noting its traditional use in Ayurvedic treatments. Sarfati shares that this tool provides the correct amount of pressure during a light, gentle massage.

What Are the Benefits of Belly Facials?

The benefits of belly facials extend beyond just skin care. The gentle massages can also help alleviate stress and improve overall well-being. They also help keep skin hydrated, something Barton Schwartz says is most important. She also recommends maintaining a healthy diet with adequate nutrients. “Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water, which helps your skin stay soft and less prone to stretch marks,” she notes.

What to Avoid

While belly facials can be incredibly beneficial for pregnant women, there are certain precautions to keep in mind. “Avoiding harsh chemicals and ingredients like retinoids, hydroquinone, AHAs, BHAs, and chemical sunscreens is essential to protect the delicate skin on the belly,” says Barton Schwartz. Additionally, cut back on caffeine consumption as it can increase the risk of stretch marks.

These treatments, where done professionally or at home, offer pregnant women a safe and effective way to care for their changing bodies and promote skin health during this special time. By incorporating belly facial into your self-care routine, you can enjoy a smoother, more comfortable pregnancy journey.
