The Perfect Snack Food For Aging Skin Is Not What You Think

When we think “best foods for aging skin,” (a common thought, we must admit) the list typically consists of blueberries, salmon, walnuts-you know, the common omega-3 and antioxidant-rich foods that we try to sneak into our diets in-between massive gulps of green tea. What’s not on our list of usual suspects is popcorn. But it should be. Popcorn, it turns out, is a snack packed with even higher antioxidant levels than fruits and vegetables.

In a report that was presented at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society, popcorn was declared “the perfect snack food” as scientists reported that it contains more of the healthful antioxidant substances called polyphenols than fruits and vegetables. Polyphenols have been known to put the breaks on skin inflammation and reduce cell decay.

Study leader Joe Vinson, Ph.D., explained that the polyphenols are more concentrated in popcorn, which averages only about 4 percent water, while polyphenols are diluted in the 90 percent water that makes up many fruits and vegetables.

Don’t go nuts at the movie theater just yet though, Vinson warned that the way people prepare and serve popcorn can quickly kill its healthful image. Air-popped is the best way to go. And it should go without saying that just because popcorn is a “healthful” snack, it shouldn’t replace your veggie and fruit consumption.
