We know Salma Hayek as an actress, producer and model, but now, cofounding a subscription smoothie service with Juice Generation that doubles as skin care can be added to the star’s long list of accomplishments. Dubbed as BIY (Blend it Yourself), the national edible beauty service includes a range of 12 smoothies—you can choose between the Beauty, Greens, Superfruits, Protein lines—and three açaí bowls that arrive at your door already prepared and portioned with flash-frozen, high-quality organic produce for the perfect “sip or slather” every time—all you have to do is add water or nut milk and hit “blend.” The best part: The recipes stemmed from the actress’ kitchen, where she, along with her family and friends, have relied on these exact blends to nourish both their bodies and skin for years.

“To me, beauty always started in the kitchen or in the bathroom,” Hayek tells WWD. “She [my grandmother] would be at the breakfast table and take papaya and put orange juice in it and honey and stick it on her face. She would blend the nuts, stick it in there and scrub her face with it and leave it on as a mask. And that’s it. That’s how I grew up.” And so BIY was born, where all nutritious, flavorful smoothie and bowl recipes double as face masks, too. Hayek’s interpretation of her family recipe can be found in the Papaya Avocado blend, which she describes is designed to “renew” a dull complexion through the natural hydrating properties found in avocados, and the exfoliating properties in the naturally occurring enzymes present in papayas and lemons.

If you’re interested in only the smoothie or bowl facet of the service, Hayek says your skin will still benefit even if you don’t slather on the blends. “The things that work for your face really can also work from the inside out. We combined some ingredients so if you don’t put it on your face and drink it, it’s still good for your skin,” she says. But, Hayek explains that directly applying the products to the skin will obviously boost its appearance, too, and that she uses these exact products on the regular to keep her skin looking healthy—particularly the Papaya Avocado smoothie, which she says she applies before makeup in place of moisturizer and other products. “No eye cream—nothing. My skin feels great; it’s not greasy and also because of the cold, it feels tighter. Even if you think this is weird, it’s not something that [you say] ‘Oh, with time this will look great.’ No. You immediately feel the difference and see the difference.”

The subscription service has a monthly or bimonthly shipping option where you can customize six, 12 or 24 smoothie or açaí-bowl deliveries (they can be mixed and matched!) straight to your door. Depending on the plan, the products range from $7 to $8 a piece, but there is also a one-time sample option for first-time buyers. Blend it Yourself’s website launched this morning, and smoothies and bowls are available for preorder (they’ll begin to ship on July 17).
