Botox, Dysport and Xeomin, also known as neuromodulators, may be the holy grail in the fight against aging, but like so many other things in the beauty world, it has its time and place. These are the certain instances when you should opt out:

When you’re pregnant
The rule of thumb is to stay away from Botox or any type of cosmetic injectable or filler when you’re pregnant, simply because no studies have been able to prove that the product can harm an unborn child or that it passes through breast milk, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

If you really don’t need it
Yes, you can take a preventive approach—which we are all for—and get Botox before lines and wrinkles really set in. But, don’t do it just for the sake of doing it if you really don’t need it. There’s no reason to start doing it if your skin is completely perfect and you don’t even exhibit the very first signs of aging.

If you have a big event that day
Botox (and all neuromodulators for that fact) take time to “kick in.” If you have an important meeting, a big party or an event where you’ll be photographed, plan your appointment for at least two weeks in advance. There’s always the potential for bruising, and you’ll look that much better once it sets in.

If you need volume correction or have majorly sagging skin
Botox won’t give fullness to your skin, nor will it tighten up sagging—that you will need fillers for. What it will do is temporarily paralyze muscle contractions so that when you make an expression, a line or wrinkle won’t form.
