Breaking News: FDA Approves Juvéderm Voluma XC

We've been telling you about the much anticipated arrival of Juvéderm Voluma™ XC for quite some time and it is finally here. The first filler specifically developed for the cheek area, Juvéderm Voluma™ XC, has just been approved by the FDA to correct volume loss in the cheek area. For years, many fillers have been used off-label for correcting this area but this is the first hyaluronic acid filler to be approved by the FDA for this purpose.

“As people age, the cheek area can lose volume, causing the cheeks to flatten out and the skin to droop and sag,” says Beverly Hills, CA, dermatologist Derek H. Jones, MD, a clinical investigator in the Juvéderm Voluma™ XC pivotal study.

Different than other injectables that are currently on the market, Voluma is made with the thickest hyaluronic acid to date and allows for the gel to flow more easily and consistently. It also contains a small amount of lidocaine which helps to numb the treatment area during the injection procedure.

When a hyaluronic acid filler is injected into areas that show signs of aging, water is drawn to the area and binds to the molecules of the filler to fill in the lines and wrinkles by literally plumping them up with moisture. In the case of Voluma XC, the gel is injected into the cheek area to gently lift the skin, eliminating the apperance of hollow cheeks.

According to Dr. Jones, in clinical trials physicians and patients were able to see instant correction of age-related volume loss in the cheek area, which resulted in a more youthful appearance overall. The most common side effects observed were temporary injection-site tenderness, swelling, firmness, lumps/bumps, bruising, pain, redness, discoloration, and itching, but all were moderate in severity.

Hi Marsha! It is similar to Radiesse in that you place Voluma deep and it has great lift! And it can bereversed if needed. I am not sure of the pricing yet - best to ask your local allergan rep. Have fun with it!

My Voluma XC shipment arrives tomorrow and I can't wait to try it out. The syringes hold 1cc each and I will be charging $650 for a single 1cc syringe for the first 10 patients.

Is this new filler the hyaluronic acid equivalent of ...say, Radiesse....to lift and perform much like scaffolding beneath the skin? Also, what is the volume in cc's provided with each syringe? This would be for deep tissue injection? Also, what is the cost per syringe?

Love that Voluma has recieved FDA approval -now we have another great option for mid-cheek volumization here in the US. I had the privilege of being one of the trainers for Voluma's launch last weekend and felt very comfortable training the other highly experienced MDs in its use. This hyaluronic acid has the most lift of all the HA's and is perfect for augmenting the mid-face and lasts 2 years! In addition, it is reversible should the need arise. Patients tolerate the injections well and its use in the mid cheek also helps soften under eye circles and nasolabial folds in many patients, so less filler was needed in those areas. Voluma is a great addition to our filler armamentarium for a more long lasting, natural volumized appearance - but be sure to have it injected by a highly trained physician.

I’m very excited to be one of the first practices to be offering Voluma to my patients. This will be an excellent tool in facial rejuvenation and in liquid face-lifting. The advantage of Voluma over some of our previous fillers is that clinical trials have shown it lasts up to 2 months in most patients. In addition, it is reversible which allows patients to be more comfortable if they don’t like the results as it can be modified or tailored to suit their needs. Voluma is similar to Radiesse which we currently have in this country. I have lectured in other countries about the use of Voluma with my techniques in liquid face-lifting. It will be exciting to be able to use the product on-label in this country for adding volume in the face.
