In a day when celebrities seem to defy the effects of time, and gravity for that matter, “aging gracefully” means something different now than it did a few decades ago. Before, stars were lucky not to gain too much weight as they aged, and now, they are expected to look as though they haven’t had one extra day in the sun, let alone a decade.
There are some actresses, however, that walk the very hard-to-find line of looking just right—meaning, they don’t look over-injected or pulled, but as if they aged in a vacuum, devoid of UV radiation, pollution and cheeseburgers. Helen Mirren is the perfect example of this. The 67-year-old (she turns 68 next week), multiple award-winning actress has a stunning bikini body, beautiful skin and, yes, wrinkles.
While Mirren hasn’t publicly admitted to having plastic surgery, it is speculated that she has undergone a very subtle necklift and facelift, which has left her looking like a naturally gorgeous 50-something woman instead of an aging celebrity desperately trying to pull and prod her way back to her 20s. She looks dignified, beautiful and comfortable in her still slightly sagging skin.
What do you think? In a time when plastic surgery is more accepted, does “aging gracefully” mean embracing the scalpel with restraint or does it mean growing older and simply embracing every wrinkle and saggy bit?
