Ever since Camila Cabello rose to fame with the popularity of her former girl group, Fifth Harmony, we’ve always associated the singer with a few things: her incredible voice, adorably short stature and, of course, her gorgeous brunette hair. From her time with Fifth Harmony to her solo career and public relationship with Shawn Mendes, Cabello’s dark hair has been a staple in how we know and love the Havana singer.
Just this week, though, Cabello took the the viral Call Her Daddy podcast to discuss all things growing up, turning 27, and how all the changes in her life led her to making a big change to her appearance: dyeing her brunette strands platinum blonde. Ahead, the reason why Camila made the leap to the blonde side.
Why Camila Cabello Ditched Her Brunette Strands: “I felt like I needed a big, physical change”
Alongside host Alex Cooper, Camila opened up about a lot of things in her life as a newly 27-year-old, one of which being the reason behind her transition to platinum blonde hair. “You know, I felt like I needed a big, physical change,” Cabello told Cooper. “I feel, I don’t know, my dark hair has been with me for all of my life, like it was just a significant part of how the public saw me, how the world saw me, and how I saw myself.”
Continuing on, Cabello explained that this year has been a transformative one for her both career-wise and personally, and her hair transformation ultimately boiled down to wanting her physical appearance to embody this notion of change. “I feel like it’s just been a year of…’play’ and ‘transformation’ and changing and being brave,” she told Call Her Daddy. “But I feel like also the music is so different, the world is so different that for so many reasons I was like ‘I feel like physical change needs to accompany that.'”
Going from brunette to blonde is a drastic change, and Cabello did reveal on the podcast that she experimented with wigs first before making the decision to dye. “I definitely think you need to try wigs because it’s such a big change,” she said. “But I do feel like everyone should do it… it brings out a different part of your personality. It’s kind of like a YOLO.”
