Like mother, like daughter. If you didn’t know Reese Witherspoon had a daughter, you’d think Ava Phillippe was her twin sister. One thing Phillippe learned from her mother is to stand up for herself and speak her truth. And every once in a while, the daughter gets remarks about her body by body and tattoo shamers.
The 24-year-old star shared a Tiktok video of herself applying red lipstick, sharing that she “achieved a major milestone as a woman online…” with the caption “pretty is as pretty does,” a quote her mother shared with her that’s stuck with her to this day. “Body shaming is simply toxic behavior,” she began.
“I saw 2 different strangers commenting on my body,” she continued. “The first said I should get on Oz*mpic because I’m too fat. The second accused me of starving myself because I’m too thin. My weight did not change in the time period between their comments. (& it wouldn’t be any of their business if it did!),” she shared.
She smeared lipstick on her left cheek and walked away from the camera. She further explained in the text that, “it’s such bullsh*t. No one deserves to be picked apart for what they look like. You don’t always know what someone’s gone through or what they struggle with. But no matter who you are… Your beauty exceeds such superficial measures.” Her mom responds in the comment section, saying, “Yes to all of this.”
The 24-year-old star shared another TikTok of herself mouthing, “At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks but you.” In the video, Phillippe has her hair down while wearing a white T-shirt paired with a beige tank top, showing off her dainty tattoos on her arms, captioning the video, “When strangers online say they hate my tattoos… #wronggirl #sorrynotsorry.”
Phillippe honors her mom’s advice in an exclusive interview with People. “Every time that comes up in my brain or I see people bring critical of others online for their appearance, I just always think, you’re only as beautiful as you treat other people,” Phillippe tells People. “As we move through the world, I find that beauty is really subjective, but what’s not is being kind and being open and treating people with respect. I think that you glow from within when you’re a good person.”
