It goes without saying that screen icon and humanitarian Audrey Hepburn has left a legacy. Sophisticated and stylish, the Belgian-born British actress shepherded in a new wave of fashion and femininity, as she created memorable roles and reached international acclaim. As a tireless advocate for children’s rights, Hepburn also served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador from 1988 to 1993, receiving the United States’ highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in 1992.
“The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair,” Hepburn so famously said. “The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It’s the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows and the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years.”
By all accounts, Hepburn also had a lighthearted streak. “I honestly think it is the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills…I love people who make me laugh.”
Hepburn also had one famous tongue-in-cheek quote about her own beauty: “I owe 50 percent of my beauty to my mother, and the other 50 percent to Erno Laszlo.”
As the brand shared with us, Hepburn was a huge fan of Dr. Laszlo, and his skin-care line. After years of heavy film makeup, she came to understand that if “your skin isn’t good, it’s a signal that something is wrong.”
“With Audrey’s strong presence in the film industry, she unlocked the key for a makeup look that not only looks great on camera, but lasts all day: a perfected skin-care routine,” says Patricia Schuffenhauer, chief product officer at Erno Laszlo. “As we’ve continued to see in the beauty industry, consumers are understanding the importance of a proper, hydrated base of the skin to achieve a radiant glam.”
Schuffenhauer also says today’s “trends” are rather reminiscent of Hepburn’s style. “We’ve also seen a resurgence of minimalistic and clean girl makeup, showcasing Erno Laszlo’s products like the Shake-It Tinted Skin Treatment ($56) used by Audrey as a symbol of timelessness in the beauty category.”
