New trend alert: People are embracing bright hair colors for summer, whether it be dyeing every strand from root to tip or embracing a bold ombré. But, constantly switching up your hair color takes its toll—drying it out and making it brittle, for one—and it can get pretty expensive.

That is, unless you use party streamers.

You read that correctly—crepe paper, the material that the streamers at your last birthday party were made out of, is the new way beauty bloggers are achieving their bright summer hairstyles.

To get the look yourself, all you have to do is cut the colored crepe paper of your choice into small strips, submerge them in a bowl of warm salt water, and then soak your hair in the bowl of extracted dye for 15–30 minutes. You can also paint the dye on your hair with a brush and wrap it in foil to wait, or you can take pieces of soaked crepe paper and wrap them directly around sections of your hair with a rubber band for more of a dip-dyed look.

Unfortunately for brunettes, this technique only works on those with lighter hair colors. To get in on the trend, you can bleach darker hair before you start the crepe paper process to lighten it enough so that the paper’s dye shows up. Depending on how often you wash your hair, the dye will last for 6–8 days of color. The temporary nature of this trend is great if you love to change your look often, because when one color fades you can quickly (and inexpensively!), you can move onto the next.

So head to your local party store and stock up on streamers—but when you’re dyeing, make sure you wear gloves so your hands don’t end up matching your locks.
