Renee Zellweger’s Shocking New Look

Originally published 10/23/2014; Updated: 4/22/2015

As award-winning actress Renee Zellweger stepped out onto the red carpet, the buzz was not about her dress, her hair, or her latest movie. Instead, it was about her face. Zellweger is being confronted with endless questions about her recent transformation and many believe it involved injectables. We turned to the experts for their thoughts.

While Zellweger attributes her new look to a refreshed outlook on life, her appearance looks severely altered, especially her eyes and brows. According to Troy, MI, plastic surgeon Anthony Youn, MD, Renee is “missing her arched brows and that tilt to her outer eyes. Her cheeks, lips, nose and jawline don't appear to have changed. Her eyebrows have dropped and are flat, straight and unruly and the corners of her eyelids have descended. In my opinion, she probably had injections of a neurotoxin in her forehead. Although a little botulinum toxin can smooth the forehead, overinjecting can cause the eyebrows to drop and the eyelids to look heavy.”

Dr. Youn says botulinum toxins can be very powerful when injected off-label in the forehead to reshape the brows. “A small change—even just a few millimeters—in the brows can make a drastic change in your appearance because the facial expressions are altered.”

If you’re going to have Botox, Dysport or Xeomin used off label, start off conservatively and go slow. “One to two weeks later, go back to your doctor to make sure the result is what you want. If your brows are already arched or dramatic and toxins are used across the entire forehead, there’s a good chance that the brow is going to drop and you’ll look different,” says Dr. Youn.

Always choose a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist that is qualified to perform injectables. It is imperative to communicate to your doctor what your aesthetic goals are so that you are happy with the end result and still look like yourself post-procedure. “The majority of patients that have procedures done are very happy with their results. Be upfront and communicate your needs and wants with your doctor so that you are on the same page,” says La Jolla, CA, plastic surgeon Robert Singer, MD.

Zelwegger stepped back into the public spotlight since debuting her new look with an appearance at the ALS Association Golden West Chapter’s annual One Starry Night benefit in Los Angeles this past Monday. Though she hasn't confirmed that she had cosmetic work done, we must admit that she looked young and fresh faced on the red carpet.

I love the new look and she can probably see much better now! I don't think she did this for the look, but she was probably having vision problems with her eyes being so squinty. I don't know why people have to be so critical, it's no one's business what she did or why, but I think she looks wonderful.

She had a blepharoplasty and Botox which lowered her brow. I would have consulted on her I would have recommended a brow lift too. When the Botox wears off her brow will lift-wrinkles will come back. If she choose a brow lift, she'd need very little Botox to maintain a wrinkle free forehead-if that is what she is seeking. I like her look now, but definitely recommend brow lift.

The only thing I can see that she MAY have had done, is her eyelids. She had the sort of eyelids that can make it more difficult to see as one ages. They can droop more and more over the years and she MAY have had those fixed. Many do it out of necessity and I personally don't think it's yours, mine or anyones business what this lovely actress does to her face. She owes NO one an explanation!!

I think she looks great ! If you put her old haircut on her today picture you would see all she had was an eyelid lift, probably to improve her sight. As a woman in her 50's I know that eyelid droop happens to a lot of people and there's nothing wrong with seeing better . She was beautiful before and after!

She now joins the club that Jennifer Grey (of Dirty Dancing) belongs to. A shame really! Just as Jennifer Grey now looks like every other "starlette" instead of her own unique style and look, Renee Z. has done the same thing, with the exception that at least it's easier to "see" Renee in the new look than it is to see Jennifer. I just hope that Renee hasn't done in her acting career like Jennifer did. I fully believe that had Jennifer left her look (specifically her nose) alone, she would have gone on to a bigger career than just Dirty Dancing. Yes, I know she's done a few more things, but nothing as worthy and IF you can recognize her at all, it's usually by a mannerism or two. They are 2 of my favorite actresses (LOVE Dirty Dancing and Down with Love) but it's just sad that they couldn't be happy with the faces they were born with...however, I do hope with all my heart that Renee goes on to be as successful with her new look as she was with her former look.

Wow, look at those beautiful blue eyes - that we can now SEE! I hope she's thrilled with the results. If you look at the "before" photo, particularly the outer corner of her eye on the right side of the photo, you can see the drooping which was going to become, or had become, a problem.

Her face has lost its original "personality" before she had a distinctive cute face now she still looks attractive but is unrecognisable and forgettable. I wouldn't recognise her as being Renee Zellweger in the street or anywhere.

More than likely her eyelids were falling lower and posing a problem to her eyesight. Many people have to have the lid raised to avoid that problem. It does make her look different, but no less beautiful.

she was much cuter and natural looking before, also looked younger to me. I don't understand why people do this to themselves and are so insecure in their appearance even though they are very attractive....just sayin

She looks so much older in her new look. Before she looked in the bloom of health and there was 'soul' in her eyes. Why why aren't some people satisfied with the uniqueness they are born with, and all want to look alike with tailored eyebrows & botoxed bits and pieces. It's uniqueness, not uniformity which makes a person stand out as special.

She did a Jennifer Grey. What made her unique was her look...Now she is just another generic actress. I honestly can't picture the "new" Renee playing quirky Bridget Jones.

I think she looked much better before. she had a sweet innocent face. Sad that people have to mess around with what nature gave them. Doesn't look like her now. I had to read the heading to see he she was!

I think she looks much better in her after picture. I am curious, however, how her rather " round" face was made to look much slimmer than before? Her eyebrows look better in her after photo no matter what was done.

  • tonome

She looks better now, she did not 'lose' her look and anyone who 'didn't recognize' her is lying. She had eye surgery because her droopy lids were affecting her vision and that's it. It's like getting mad that Sara Jessica parker that had hideous, huge, witch mole removed, or thinking that Anna Paquin looks better with that nasty gab between her teeth. Stop being jealous when people get an obvious, unattractive, problem fixed.

She had the skin ( upper bleph.) taken out. Are you kidding me she looks beautiful!!! More like a model now. Before she was pretty but had too much skin and looked like she had eaten too much sodium, or had too much alcohol, she looked puffy and bloated. She is even more beautiful now. Botox ha, had it for 20 years and no that's not what it is but who cares. She looks great and people should stuff a sock in it. People that said she looked better before must not have an artistic eye. Yes she does look different but better.

How sad to think that she was so unhappy or uncomfortable with her looks before that she took this step, whatever it was, to alter her look so drastically. Her new look doesn't even look like the look she was born with.

Too Bad Girls...Renee was beautiful Before and She is Beautiful Now. NO DOC. She didn't have any injections in he forehead she didn't need them. Do you see any lines in the before picture??? YES she did have tissue removed for the upper eye lid, which opened her eye up and brought her lash line closer to the brow. which she has gone lighter with as she did with the rest of her make up. And who knows maybe she can see better now. In any case she is still one of the most talented actress of her time. My hat is off to you girl, God Bless.

For me, the problem is that she looks like a completely different person. There was nothing wrong with the face she had before. This before and after just makes me sad, lol. I feel like it takes away the personality you could see in her face before.

The secret is in the eyes. She looked unique before, she looks prettier now. Leave her alone!!! It is her decision. Talk about her talent, her accomplishments, please.

  • DramaProf

In my opinion, the change is mostly due to her going MORE NATURAL. The "after" photo has a distinct lack of makeup. The other difference is that her eyes are more open. My mother had some extra skin on her eyelids removed when it was getting increasingly difficult for her to see. Renee's eyes have that same "after" look.

  • Patrice

Yes, there is no denying that the "after" pictures are of a very attractive woman, but sadly the essence of Rene is now lost forever. Her real face had so much individuality and character. Now she is just like a carbon copy of every other woman out there. I cannot imagine this Rene playing Bridget Jones and gaining the empathy of the audience now, after the cosmetic surgery, like she did in those movies. We all learned to love her, through her authenticity and vulnerability as we saw her true self shine through in these roles. When will we quit wanting to look just like every one else, and start embracing ourselves, and loving our so called "flaws"?

One of my colleagues in her 60's had eye surgery to make her lids less droopy. They were literally affecting her vision. Her eyes looked a lot like Renee's presurgery, except that age make the lids drop even further. If she had it done to see, GOOD FOR HER.

She looked so much better before - gorgeous in fact. I don't like the new look at all. Why Renee, WHY!??

  • CC

She had plastic surgery on her eyelids. It's a common procedure that a lot of Asian (yes - I know she's not Asian, but she had Asian looking eyes) people have done, to reduce a heavy upper eyelid and make their eyes more big and Western looking. I don't think she had Botox at all. Her face looks exactly the same, except for her eyelids.

  • Catherine

I agree with David Anthony, an upper blepharoplasty. Why isn't anyone pointing out how hooded her eyelids were before? As she got older the upper eyelids probably started to get worse and affect her vision (which insurance often covers). She's still beautiful, it's just now we can see the color of her eyes better!

  • Hera

I compared the before and after photos and was surprised to discover that she probably just had her eyes done. It's a common procedure but in her case it changed the character of her face so much she lost her very Renee Zellweger look. Goes to show how little need be changed before you alter a look almost completely. Fascinating!! Oh, and my personal opinion is that she looked gorgeous before, truly sexy. But maybe she was tired of that.. So now she looks well.. Still pretty, but ordinarily pretty.

I can HONESTLY say that she looked better before the surgery.

  • David Anthony

She clearly had an upper blepharoplasty... Botox can and does 'relax' and soften the lines in the forehead, but more often than not, people are looking for a slight lift of the brow, not a 'droop.'
