11 Brands to Support During Breast Cancer Awareness Month featured image

During October, you see a rise in pink products, all for a good reason. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and many brands “go pink” in support of the hundreds of thousands of people affected by the condition each year.

Dorraya El-Ashry, PhD, chief scientific officer of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, told us that breast cancer incidence is on the rise, with an estimated 281,550 women and 2,650 men predicted to be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2021. Per El-Ashry, this was the first year that breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world.

As October is all about fostering education and awareness about breast cancer, El-Ashry provided some tips to help us stay vigilant. El-Ashry suggests performing a self-check. “Look out for any changes to your breasts. Signs can include things other than a lump, such as redness, dimpling of the skin, and thickening of the breast,” advised El-Ashry. However, she notes that “nothing is a replacement for screenings, so if it’s time for your mammogram, get it done.”

With one in eight women experiencing a breast-cancer diagnosis at some point in their life, you’re likely to know someone impacted by the condition. It can be challenging to gauge how to support them, but El-Ashry offers some sage advice. “One of our best tips is to remember that every person’s experience with breast cancer is different. Ask what you can do to help before assuming,” said El-Ashry. She also advocates for “open, honest, non-judgmental communication” and avoiding “the urge to cheerlead.” If you know someone in treatment, El-Ashry suggests offering to run errands for them, dropping off a meal, or sending them a care package. “Think comfy clothes or a blanket, lotion for dry skin, hats or scarves, ginger candy for nausea, a book.”
