Strolling out of the spa post-facial or massage should hopefully come with a state of unaltered bliss. But, according to New York’s Haven Spa aesthetician Mariola Barczewska, these five no-nos can seriously hinder you on your road to relaxation.
Don’t drink alcohol.
There’s a reason your therapist reminds you to drink a lot of water when you take off. “Spa services can be detoxing and pumping your body full of alcohol—even just ONE glass of wine—can strain your kidneys. If you do drink, you will feel more sore and more tired than you would have. It’s best to drink natural juices and water.”

Don’t go home to your same facial products routine unless under advisement from your aesthetician.
You probably booked a facial because you noticed some issues (acne, texture, fine lines and wrinkles). They didn’t show up overnight, and most people don’t realize how their skin care might not be right for them. “It’s not just age that changes our skin, it’s the seasons, hormonal fluctuations and stress levels. Adjusting your skin care routine to what your skin needs most is the way to look your best.”
Don’t go to the gym.
Sweat may clog your freshly cleaned pores, and you don’t want to overwork your muscles after a massage.

Don’t go on a job interview—or a first date!
Whether you had a massage or a facial, your face will most likely be a giveaway. “You may have a ring on your face after the massage from the face cradle, or you may be a little red after a facial. Go home and relax.”
Don’t be afraid to call with any questions.
Above all, remember that your therapist is happy to help you in any way he or she can, even after you leave. “If you’re sore or tired, or even if you aren’t feeling great—let your therapist know. They’re here for you.”
