What are the defining characteristics of 2B hair?

When it comes to hair, 2B tresses basically have their own special flair. Picture loose S-shaped waves that dance effortlessly between the realms of straight and curly, with a slight wave pattern that starts near the roots and continues towards the ends. It’s like having a perpetual beach vibe, no matter the season. However, there’s a downside, according to the founder of Blaq Luxury Hair Products Cherice Williams, this hair type, while undeniably charming, has a tendency to flirt with frizz, meaning your waves may not always have a clear definition. If you have thick 2B hair, Williams explains that you’re at an advantage, as styles tend to hold better.

What are the main challenges people with 2B hair face in maintaining healthy hair?

If you have 2B hair, you’re likely familiar with the ongoing battle to maintain its health and vitality. Those with 2B hair often wrestle with frizz and dryness. Achieving the delicate balance of hydration without compromising on volume or succumbing to build up is a frequent challenge, as noted by our experts.  “Individuals with 2B hair may also encounter difficulty in achieving volume, given its tendency to expand less compared to tighter curl patterns,” explains lead hairstylist for Mielle Organics, Jatina Nixon. She recommends incorporating layers into your haircut, infusing the hair with movement and fullness.

The natural structure of 2B hair also makes it more vulnerable to damage from heat styling tools, harsh chemicals and excessive manipulation. Exercise caution when utilizing such methods to preserve the hair’s integrity. Additionally, Williams emphasizes the importance of selecting the right products tailored to the unique needs of 2B hair. “Opt for lightweight, moisturizing formulas that enhance natural waves without weighing them down. Finding the perfect product combination may require some experimentation, but it’s essential for maintaining healthy 2B hair,” she explains.

How to style 2B hair

“It’s important to use hydrating and defining products specifically designed for wavy hair to enhance the natural wave pattern and reduce frizz. Avoid heavy products that weigh down the hair and cause buildup,” says Williams. She adds that “2B hair can hold styles well but may need some extra effort to maintain the wave pattern throughout the day. Using a diffuser when blow-drying can help enhance the waves, and using a curling wand or twisting technique can help redefine any lost waves.”

Contrary to popular belief, using curl cream on 2B hair will not help create curls, says Nixon. “Curl cream can be used, however, it will just enhance your hair’s texture. Products don’t create curls. They enhance the texture present.”

“Drying and diffusing the hair upside down and scrunching the hair when applying products is another styling trick to create more definition and volume,” says Nixon. “You can also use twist technique to help redefine any lost waves,” adds Williams.

How to take care of 2B hair

To take care of 2B hair, our experts say it’s essential to follow a proper hair-care routine. Here are some of their top tips:

Washing

Use a gentle shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for 2B hair. Avoid over-washing to prevent stripping natural oils from your hair. Choose sulfate-free products to maintain moisture.

Conditioning

Deep condition your hair at least once a week to hydrate and nourish your curls. Leave the conditioner on for a few minutes, then use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers to detangle the hair before rinsing. “If your hair is dry and lacking moisture, deep conditioning is a great way to help restore it,” says Nixon. “Try using a cap or adding heat to lift the cuticle and allow the conditioner to penetrate the strands.”

Hydrating

“Apply leave-in conditioner, curl cream or mousse to damp hair to enhance moisture retention. This helps prevent frizz and defines your natural curls,” says Williams. “Scrunching the hair while drying it also helps to encourage the natural wave pattern. Use a diffuser when blow-drying to minimize heat damage.”

Styling

Avoid brushing your hair when dry, as it can disrupt the natural curl pattern and cause frizz. Instead, use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers to gently detangle your hair when wet or coated with conditioner. “Using styling techniques like finger coiling or twist-outs can help you enhance your waves,” says Williams.”

Protection

Our experts say it’s important to prioritize heat protection before using heat styling tools like curling irons or straighteners. Opt for lower heat settings and limit their use to prevent hair damage. Additionally, use a satin bonnet or pillowcase to minimize friction and preserve your curls overnight.

Trim Regularly

“Schedule regular trims every few months to remove split ends and maintain the health of your hair,” says Williams. “This helps prevent breakage and promotes hair growth.”
