Not all tummy tuck procedures entail having the stomach muscles tightened. Although rare, and usually limited to younger patients, some cases are performed where just loose skin and fat are addressed. “Avoiding tightening the muscles also makes for an easier recovery,” says Dallas plastic surgeon Jeffrey Kenkel, MD.
If you’re prone to developing keloids (thick scars), make sure to let your plastic surgeon know since your incision may heal with one.
To determine if your stomach muscles have separated or not, follow this easy-to-do test:
“First, lay down on a bed. Then, bring your knees in toward your chest while relaxing and breathing through your mouth,” says Salt Lake City, UT, plastic surgeon Renato Saltz, MD. “Feel around or below your belly button while you slowly bring your head up. If the muscles have separated you’ll be able to feel it.”
