The Aging Buttocks

It’s no secret that things start to head south as we age, and the buttocks are no exception. While in the past, many of the solutions presented here have been conceived as “young person’s procedures,” the “health, medical history and skin tone for each patient are the defining factors for treatment, not the age,” says Boston-based plastic surgeon Fouad Samaha, MD. He also adds that each surgery must be modified to fit the individual patient’s age and issues. Skin sags as gravity takes its toll after years of weight gain and loss, and fat begins to atrophy as well, causing the posterior to appear flat. In this case, a buttocks lift or lower bodylift (which can include the abdomen and thighs, as well) can improve and/or remove excess skin and reshape your derrière. “Most frequently done in conjunction with a bodylift or abdominoplasty, the buttocks lift “improves shape and contour and tightens the skin,” says Dr. Fouad Samaha. Side effects include temporary bruising, swelling, tightness, asymmetry, dimpling and irregular scars. Expect to keep activity to a minimum for at least three weeks, and scars are a trade-off of this procedure (though they can usually be placed in a pattern that can be concealed by a bathing suit bottom).
