There are a lot of home remedies out there that promise to give you hair that shines like the top of the Chrysler Building. Whether it’s mayonnaise or beer, it seems like everyone has a shiny hair secret they swear by. While I’m usually game to try anything once, there’s one rumored shiny hair ingredient that I’m a little hesitant to try: vodka.
Hair loss expert and Plano, TX, facial plastic surgeon Samuel Lam, MD, confirmed some of my fears. “Although I cannot seriously answer the question whether vodka does anything special for hair, I can say that there are a lot of unproven home remedies, naturopathic, and other alternative therapies that have been touted to work but have not panned out.”
So far, it’s not looking so good for Team Vodka. However, Warren-Tricomi hairstylist Marc Mena actually had some interesting facts that made me feel a little more optimistic about it.
“Vodka has a low pH level and is naturally acidic, which when added to conditioner can help maintain and lower a high pH level found in the hair,” Mena. says “Vodka has the ability to seal the hair cuticle which will manage and reduce the appearance of frizz, resulting in softer and shinier strands.”
While this all sounds pretty convincing to me, Mena did add that vodka could possibly dry out your scalp and hair shaft. “But used in small moderation, and when you find your frizz needs taming, a little bit can work wonders.”
It you want to give it a try, there are a few different ways you can do it says Mena. One option is to add an ounce of vodka to your shampoo or conditioner, mix well, and use it as normal. The other option is to use it as a rinse to reduce excess buildup by adding a tablespoon of vodka to a cup of water.
As for me, I haven’t tried it yet, but it’s safe to say I’m intrigued. But if you give it a try, or have already done it, be sure to tell us about your experience in the comments below.
