Depending on when you were born, you either grew up with Hilary Duff or saw her as a charming child star. Now she’s a grown woman, and mother of three, and she looks amazing, as evidenced by her recent nude cover with Women’s Health. The actress, who is 34 years young, has glowing skin and a healthy complexion, and while many stars can contribute this to in-office treatments, Duff recently admitted to Shape that she hasn’t had a facial in three years.

So how does Duff keep her skin so healthy sans facials? The trick, she tells Shape, is exfoliation, and tons of it. “I exfoliate three times a week with Dr. Lancer The Method Polish ($68),” she tells the outlet. “It’s this super aggressive, abrasive, sandy exfoliant, and I do it dry, so with no water.” She admits that “it’s actually kind of rough, and I’m pink afterward, but I think that’s what’s helped my skin be okay without having facials.”

We recently chatted with Dr. Lancer about his newest launch (a tinted SPF that we all need this summer). He told us the polish, cleanse, nourish lineup, which he developed in the 1980s, is his favorite product. “That’s the heartbeat of this brand because it’s the reinvention of skin use products altogether,” he said.

Outside of exfoliation Duff says she likes to switch up her routine, but fully commits when she starts a new regimen. “When I use a skin-care line, I try to use at least three products from that line and use them how they’re meant to be used,” she said. Currently she’s invested in Joanna Vargas’ products, including Joanna Vargas Rejuvenating Serum ($100), Joanna Vargas Supernova Serum ($295), a Joanna Vargas moisturizer, an eye cream, sunscreen and retinol, which is new to her.

“I actually just started using retinol, which is crazy,” Duff said “I don’t understand. I’m 34, and no one told me to be on retinol? What’s going on?” She uses retinol two to three times a week to combat melasma, which she got during her last pregnancy, and signs of aging. “It’s kind of like this little miracle drug for your skin,” she said of retinol.
