About My Practice
What nonsurgical advancements have you added?
In addition to our boutique-style walk-in component, where patients can be evaluated for Botox, facial fillers, laser treatments and skin care without an appointment, we have added CoolSculpting®, a nonsurgical fat-reduction system with no pain or downtime; and Ulthera®, a new nonsurgical facial skin-tightening system that we are very excited to offer our patients.
What plastic surgery advancements are on the horizon?
Using high-resolution ultrasound to look at breast implants instead of MRI will be a valuable tool for patients. I’ve performed the initial landmark research in this area that was published in a recent issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal and believe it may truly change how we follow up with and treat our augmentation and reconstruction patients.
How do you enhance the patient experience?
We’ve created a high-quality center that strives for excellence, providing our patients individualized service using our comprehensive offering of treatments. Nestled on the first floor of a Women’s Health Center, the Bengtson Center is more like checking into a fine hotel or spa with beautiful surroundings—complete with a fireplace, warm reading nook and skin-care bar.
How would you describe your staff?
They are by far the most dynamic, engaging, joy-filled and talented staff I have ever worked with. They are extremely caring and focused on the patients and their experiences.
In which procedures are you seeing an influx?
We’re performing more breast augmentations and breast revisions with SERI® Surgical Scaffold. In addition, more minimally invasive techniques in conjunction with facial fillers are on the rise.
How would you describe your office?
The office was designed by a residential builder and creative design team to establish a space that is inviting and warm, complete with a reading nook and fireplace. Patients are greeted by a concierge, as if they’re entering a hotel or a cozy residence, and directed to our skin-care, injectable or plastic surgery center. It’s our utmost goal to make our patients feel welcomed and not intimidated.
How do you help patients choose a treatment?
We offer our patients a problem/ concern-focused approach: We inform them of the options and the potential outcomes matching with their expectations and lifestyle to help them choose the best procedure for their needs and concerns.
How do you guide patients when discussing surgical and nonsurgical options?
I believe we tend to be an either/or society when it comes to maintaining a natural, youthful appearance. However, many patients benefit from both/and, or combination treatments. For instance, both facial fillers and a facelift may be needed to restore volume and treat sagging skin.
What attracted you to facial plastic surgery?
It provides a mix of compassion, science, art and creativity.
What affiliations are you proud to have?
I am proud to be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and to be involved with the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons and American College of Surgeons.
What is your favorite part of your job?
I’m passionate about bringing innovation and art to the practice of plastic surgery. I focus on developing new techniques and procedures to constantly raise the bar and deliver the best patient outcomes I can.
What is something your patients might not know about you?
I am one of only 10 plastic surgeons selected to be a member of Allergan’s Executive Council, and I am a lead investigator for the Natrelle® 410 Highly Cohesive Gel breast implant often referred to as the “Gummy Bear.” I’m also dedicated to Revisional Cosmetic Breast Sugery and the correction of Capsular Contracture using Acellular Dermal Matrix (Alloderm / Strattice™).
What are some of the hobbies you enjoy when not working?
I love underwater photography, travel and spending time with my family. I’ve also written books on Civil War medicine. And, I’m involved in medical device development, with eight current medical patents.
