Jennifer Lopez hit tonight’s red carpet dripping in diamonds and that signature, Scott Barnes–powered “J.Lo Glow.”
Luckily, for the rest of us watching and critiquing from the couch, Jennifer Lopez’s hairstylist Chris Appleton just shared every single step he used to get that “effortless” sleek-looking updo so we could be a tiny part of the action (sans A-Rod).
First, Appleton, who is creative director for Color Wow, prepped Lopez’s hair with Color Wow Dream Coat Anti-Humidity Hair Treatment ($28) to create a base and added shine, finishing it off with a smooth blow-dry. Then, he used a 3-inch curling iron to give some wave and “bend” to the hair.

Post-iron, he divided her hair into two sections and made a ponytail—taking the top section down and around the ponytail into a top-knot bun.
As last steps, Appleton secured the shape with bobby pins and flat-ironed those two pieces around Lopez’s face, finishing the look with Color Wow Cult Favorite Firm + Flexible Hairspray ($26).
