Surgery isn’t the only long-lasting option for making one’s eyes look younger. Plastic surgeons and dermatologists have discovered that hyaluronic acid injectable fillers at the brow line-not the eyelids-are a reliable method of counteracting the sagging, bony appearance of aging eyes.
Using a technique much like that of fat injections, your doctor can use a conservative amount of hyaluronic filler to add volume to the brow, which can give eyes the appearance of more width and less lid area for a more youthful appearance.
“Although the upper lid can be improved with injections, the area we treat is the brow,” Val Lambros, MD, explained in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, a publication of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. “In some cases, filling in the brow expands the lid skin sufficiently to smooth wrinkles.”
Hyaluronic acid may be a better option than fat because it can be easier to contour and isn’t susceptible to biological factors like weight gain or a percentage of the injected material not surviving. Patients may prefer hyaluronic acid over eyelid surgery or a browlift as well, because it’s less invasive-and maybe even more effective.
“In some cases, the addition of volume may provide a better-looking result than traditional surgical procedures,” Dr. Lambros wrote.
It’s important to note Dr. Lambros’s use of the phrase “in some cases,” as this procedure is not one-size-fits-all. A board-certified facial plastic surgeon or dermatologist can assess your specific concerns and features to determine if hyaluronic acid injectables are the best option for you, and if so, which and how much product should be used.
