Unless you’re going under the knife to make a marked change in the shape of your nose or the size of your breasts, chances are, if you’re getting an aesthetic procedure done, you want the most natural results that only you and your doctor know have been done.
The key, plastic surgeons say, is knowing which areas have aged to the point of needing improvement, and which should be left alone.
“In patients where all of the components of the face have aged, expert, artistic plastic surgeons utilizing improved techniques usually create a more harmonious, youthful appearance,” says La Jolla, CA plastic surgeon Robert Singer, MD.
Choosing a board certified, experienced surgeon will help eliminate the guesswork. This type of doctor is trained in knowing what’s happening with the skin, muscle, eyelid creases and surrounding fat-and is knowledgeable in what to take out and what to leave.
If too much fat and skin is removed, for instance, a patient who has undergone blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) can end up looking hollowed out and too skinny around the eyes.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends that women in their 40s should consider mini treatments like a mid-facelift or a short-scar facelift along with fillers, and to wait until their 50s to consider a full facelift.
