Gone are the days of simple soap and water to wash away the day’s grime. Not only does the type of cleanser you use make a difference in how good your skin will look, but also how and when you cleanse your face matters too. Follow these steps each and every time you wash to ensure that your skin is cleansed correctly.
Step 1: Remove makeup with a non-stripping makeup remover.
You want a remover that is strong enough to get even the most stubborn waterproof mascara off your lashes, but sensitive enough that it won’t strip your skin of its natural oil or disturb the ph balance. A classic product that works wonders for this is Pond’s Cold Cream for Skin ($9).
Step 2: Adjust the water temperature to warm.
“It’s best to wash your face with warm water as opposed to cold water since warm water helps to soften the skin, allowing for exfoliation,” says Los Angeles celebrity aesthetician Kate Somerville. If the water is too hot, it can burn the skin and cause broken capillaries. Water that’s too cold can prevent the pores from loosening up and can leave the skin feeling tight.
Step 3: Cleanse in circular motions, without scrubbing, for at least 30 seconds.
Avoid stretching or pulling the skin, which may break or damage it. Instead, use your fingertips to gently massage the cleanser into the skin and let it sit for one to two minutes.
