While you might think looking at a picture of your favorite, thin celebrity would make you feel worse about your own physique, the opposite may be true, according to a new study. If you admire and associate yourself with a celebrity, then looking at her image may actually give you an ego boost.
A University of Buffalo study had 150 college women look at images of celebrities as well as pictures of unknown models whom they believed shared their birthdays. The women said they felt better about themselves after looking at images of celebrities they admired or felt a connection with.
However, feeling no attachment to the person in the picture did not make them feel any better.
The researchers said that it’s likely the women “assimilated” traits with the celebrities or models they felt an attachment to, and that “a parasocial bond with favorite celebrities is actually protective, and may even be beneficial for women’s body image.”
What do you think? Who are your favorite celebrities and do you think seeing their image boosts your mood and esteem?
