Considering rhinoplasty? Before scheduling surgery on your nose alone, you may want to heed the advice of researchers: you could be more satisfied with your results if you also undergo a chin augmentation.

According to a new study presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, the nose and chin are both important contributors to the face’s overall aesthetic balance, so addressing one without the other could leave patients unexpectedly disappointed with their new profile.

Using four surgical assessment methods, the researchers evaluated 100 patients who had undergone only rhinoplasty. Based on these analyses, they concluded that up to 81% of the women and up to 62% of the men could have aesthetically benefited from receiving a chin implant in addition to the changes made on their nose.

Although, personal tastes vary and there’s no such thing as a perfect face, combining the two procedures could lead to a more visually pleasing balance in a high number of patients. The study authors urge facial plastic surgeons to communicate to the patient the effect changing just one feature could have on his or her entire face.
