Regardless of whether you wear your hair straight or curly, short or long, layers can do wonders for your hair. “They allow you the flexibility of adding or eliminating volume to dictate the hair’s movement and offer more options when it comes to styling the hair,” says Seiji Kitazato, cocreative director at New York’s Frédéric Fekkai salon.

Cutting Layers the Right Way
The secret to enviable layers lies in having your hair cut so that the layers acclimate to the current length of your hair and work with your hair texture, rather than just having a variety of different lengths cut. “Go light with your layers. You don’t need to go overboard with them unless your hair is perfectly wavy with next to no frizz,” says Roszak. Most women can pull off layers, but if your hair is really long or superfine, stay away from them because they can make the hair stringy.
Who Layers Are Good For
Almost all types of hair, especially really thick, wavy or curly hair, since layers will make hair more manageable.
What They Do
Add structure, definition, volume and movement.
Get The Right Length
Ask your stylist for layers all over that will give you lift and body when you blow-dry.
Did You Know?
Just because your ends are dry (different from split or broken) doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to cut them off. “Like dry skin, treat dry hair with moisture,” says celebrity stylist Jen Atkin. “Take fish oil pills, use oils and hydrating creams on the ends and focus on the scalp to make sure it’s clean and conditioned.”
