If you’re blonde or get highlights, then you’ve probably experienced the shocking moment where you go to squeeze out a dollop of a brand new “blonde shampoo” and purple liquid comes out. Don’t worry, this shocking shampoo won’t turn your hair purple. In fact, it can actually be your best friend when it comes to preserving your hair color.

Purple shampoo can actually help prevent your hair from getting brassy because purple is the exact opposite of yellow on the color wheel. In other words, the purple helps neutralize the yellowish brassy tones that can develop in your hair over time due to hard water, air pollution, sun exposure and other factors.

It’s recommended to use it every other time you shampoo, but if you notice your hair is still looking brassy, bump it up to every wash. Since purple shampoos aren’t really made for cleansing, wash your hair with a regular shampoo first and then do another wash with the purple shampoo. This makes the purple one act more like a toner to help brighten your strands.

When looking for a purple shampoo, go for one that is really densely pigmented and dark (the scariest looking one). A couple of good options to try are Joico Color Endure Violet Sulfate-Free Shampoo ($15) and Sachajuan Silver Shampoo ($28).
