They Won’t Work for All Hair Types
“Baby-fine, silky hair may be OK just using an all-in-one most of the time, but coarse, dry and curly hair types will almost always benefit from both,” says Matrix celebrity hairstylist George Papanikolas.
They’re a Quick Fix
According to Nancy Twine, founder of hair-care brand Briogeo, some all-in-one sprays can soften, condition and protect hair while controlling frizz, but you need both for healthy hair, especially when it is exposed to environmental stressors and heat-based styling tools. “Conditioners prime hair for styling and prevent breakage from brushing, which is necessary to keep strands in tip-top shape,” she explains. “All-in-one sprays are a great complement to conditioner for those seeking extra moisture because they provide lasting hydration.”
Your Hair Changes With the Seasons
The time of year affects what your hair needs at any given time. “You need to adapt your hair routine as the seasons and weather change,” says Twine. “You could use an all-in-one on vacation, at the gym or for fast fixes, but you will still want to keep a great conditioner or mask in your routine.”
