You’ve heard a lot about the power of laser and light treatments for undoing sun-damaged skin, removing unwanted hair or tattoos, tightening slack skin and even banishing cellulite. But how do you know which laser you need? Our first piece of advice is to ask your dermatologist or plastic surgeon, but here’s a little primer on what some of the different laser colors are used for:

Red light, which is emitted with ruby or alexandrite light lasers, produce low-level, short-pulsed light that helps reduce inflammation in the facial skin (without harming any surrounding skin). It’s also commonly used to remove tattoos or hyperpigmentation. Many cellulite and fat-melting treatments use red light (not laser) in addition to vacuum and massaging devises.

Blue light is a high-intensity light treatment (rather than laser), which is typically combined with a topical medication called Levulan to kill the bacteria in pores that cause acne. Monthly upkeep is necessary since the bacteria will thrive again once treatment stops.

Yellow pulse-dye lasers are more easily absorbed into the skin’s hemoglobin, making them ideal for treating redness anywhere on the body, like birthmarks, vascular lesions, rosacea or enlarged blood vessels. You may need three to five treatments to remove the redness.
