If you don’t get your beauty sleep, it seems like no amount of makeup will mask the fact that you’re tired. And the odds are someone is going to notice. It turns out that there’s a scientific explanation for why being tired and stressed makes us look less beautiful.
Stress lessens your skin’s ability to protect itself and leads to a drop in healthy collagen (what keeps your face youthful). Plus, stress lessens the amount of melanin pigments in the skin that contribute to a healthy complexion.
When your body isn’t able to rejuvenate through sleep, dark under-eye circles appear. Sleep also redistributes the excess water we carry in our bodies at the end of the day. So when we’re lacking it, the water tends to pool under the eyes, which causes those dreaded under-eye bags occur.
Although we’re sure you’re aware that lack of sleep can age you, here’s another friendly reminder. As if a wrinkle on your face isn’t bad enough, they also show up in your arteries, which can lead to other health problems later on.
And if all of this doesn’t convince you to pencil (or pen) in your beauty sleep, there’s more. When your body is stressed and tired, your cells act 10 to 15 years older than they really are. So even if you’re only 40, you could end up looking 55.
So rest up—you’re worth it, and so are your good looks.
