If we’ve seen it once, we’ve seen it a thousand times—too much injectables and fillers. It can happen to anyone. Whether your doctor got a little over zealous with the needle or you just don’t like the look of the new facial volume, there are a couple of ways to prevent this embarrassing beauty dilemma.

First and foremost, go to an expert injector. “Never go to a doctor that’s offering a sale or discount product. Someone who is good is not going to just be giving good product away,” says Smithtown, NY, dermatologist Marina Peredo, MD. Make sure your dermatologist or plastic surgeon is board-certified and has good referrals. “If your friend got fillers and looks really natural, ask her where she went,” she says. Demand to see before and after photographs. A good doctor will have work they are proud of to show off.

Also, if you are planning on getting filler done before an event, make sure you have plenty of time. New York dermatologist Rebecca Baxt, MD, suggests doing fillers no sooner than one month before a big event to allow time for healing and touch ups. She also recommends using hyaluronic acid filler like Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane. These types of filler are easily reversed with Hyaluronidase, a product that dissolves and degrades the filler so the results of the initial injection can be diminished if you don’t like the look.

While most patients find the immediate results of soft tissue filler treatments very satisfying, an undesirable result can occur. If it does, your doctor should be able to discuss and carry out all of the treatment options to diminish the look of being over-filled.
