Some of the benefits of bariatric surgery are obvious: significant weight loss, improved quality of life, and a lower risk for heart disease and diabetes. And recently, a Montreal study proved another important advantage.
After following more than 1000 weight-loss surgery patients for five years-and over 5700 non-patients who matched the patients in age, weight and sex-McGill University researchers found that the risk for various kinds of cancers (pancreatic, skin, uterine, etc.) were lowered.
Most notable was the decrease in the risk for two cancers in particular: a 70% risk reduction for colon cancer, and an amazing 85% risk reduction for breast cancer.
“The evidence is mounting that weight loss through weight-loss surgery, if you are extremely obese, is extremely beneficial both to your health as well as to your quality of life,” study leader Dr. Nicolas Christou told Reuters.
The more health benefits studies find, the clearer it becomes that weight-loss surgery is not just a cosmetic procedure.
