Fluctuating hormones may actually be the culprit, Australian researchers found when, for a year they charted the hormone levels of 50 overweight or obese people who lost an average of 30 pounds during a 10-week diet. Dieting and losing weight actually caused various appetite-regulating hormones to shift in amounts-causing the dieters to be hungrier than they were before the diet started, the study in the New England Journal of Medicine revealed. This may actually make maintaining their new weight more difficult than the weight loss itself.
So how do we stop this cycle? Scientists say more study needs to be done to learn how to stabilize hormone levels during and after weight loss, but a sure-fire way to avoid it is to achieve an ideal weight with medical supervision and stop the yo-yo dieting for good.
