The beauty industry has gone through some major changes in the past few years, with one of the biggest improvements being the sudden expansion of more natural, healthier beauty products. This movement has even caught on with massive retailers, most notably Target, which earlier this year brought more natural beauty offerings to its shelves and committed to full ingredient transparency with consumers. And while we were beyond excited about Target’s announcement back in February, Walmart just made its own big move toward a chemical-free future, and people are beyond ecstatic.
Beginning next year, the discount retailer will expect all suppliers—beauty brands included—to list all ingredients on labels and online. “We know our customers are interested in what goes into products and how they are made,” said Zach Freeze, senior director of strategic initiatives for sustainability at Walmart, in a press release for the company. “It’s important for them, and we are advocating for them by encouraging innovation and transparency into that process.”

But that’s not all, Walmart is also committed to reducing its consumables chemical footprint by decreasing the amount of potentially harmful chemicals in its products. “Walmart has set an industry precedent for targeting and measuring reductions of chemicals of concern in its products,” said Boma Brown-West, senior manager at the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF).
Of course all of these changes won’t happen overnight (Walmart aims to reduce its consumables chemical footprint by 10 percent by 2022), but these new policies are certainly the first step to a more sustainable future sans harmful chemicals.
