Ever since Kim Kardashian West posted pictures of her face following her Vampire Facial treatment on social media, a buzz was created in a matter of minutes. The somewhat-scary image showed her bloody face and red skin, which made millions of women intrigued by the procedure.

Even though the Vampire Facial came onto the market a few years ago, it’s showing no signs of becoming a thing of the past.

The facial, which is technically a Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment, is, according to some skin care experts one of the best anti-aging procedures out there. “PRP is created from your own blood. It involves a simple blood draw into a special test tube, which is then spun in a centrifuge so that the plasma, with millions of platelets, floats to the top,” says Willowbrook, IL, dermatologist Jessie Cheung, MD. The PRP solution is then used in tandem with micro needling, creating hundreds of microscopic holes in the skin (the solution is applied to the skin after the holes have been made).

Unlike other beauty treatments and skin saviors, the Vampire Facial harnesses your body’s natural healing power. “It contains several growth factors and cytokines that repair and regenerate tissue,” says Dr. Cheung. Tijuana, Mexico plastic surgeon Juan Carlos Fuentes, MD, also says the treatment leaves skin smoother and more even in color.

While your face will look red, swollen and bloody immediately after the treatment (it can last a few hours to up to three days after), the results (you’ll see glowing skin immediately but it can take a month or so for the full results, which last about three months, to surface) it provides for cellular rejuvenation are unparalleled because it shortens healing time and stimulates collagen. “Athletes have used it to heal sprains, and now dermatologists are using the technique for hair restoration,” says Dr. Cheung.

Turns out, this once “scary” procedure may actually unlock the answers to many more beauty problems than we ever realized it could.
