The U.S. may be one step closer to approval of the first non-surgical medical device for fat reduction through ultrasound fat emulsification (liquefying fat via external focused ultrasound energy). UltraShape, developed in Israel and approved in many European countries, recently received approval for use in Canada by the Canadian Ministry of Health.
Here’s how it works: External focused ultrasound energy passes through the skin, deep into the fat layer, breaking up fat cells and dispersing them into a more fluid form; they are then naturally cleared by the body. The treatment works on unwanted excess fat deposits of the arms, abdomen, thighs and buttocks.
Like liposuction, this is not an alternative for weight loss, but rather for the reduction of fat resistant to diet and weight loss. Unlike liposuction, however, this is not surgery, and rather than loosening and removing fat from the body to sculpt new contours, it non-invasively liquefies fat to be naturally cleared out.
