Having options is good. For cosmetic plastic surgery patients or those facing breast reconstruction after breast cancer-related mastectomy, a new breast implant offers better volume control of the final result.
The Spectra Adjustable Gel implant was created by Boca Raton, FL, plastic surgeon, Hilton Becker, MD. “It’s an adjustable gel implant with a very small inner lumen that can be filled with saline,” Dr. Becker says. Picture it like a round chamber within a silicon implant, almost like an egg yolk within the center of the egg whites. This chamber can be filled with a customized amount of saline during or after surgery to adjust for symmetry and fine-tune the size and projection of the implant.
It’s ideal for those patients who want flexibility. “It works well for cosmetic patients because it gives the adjustability of saline with the feel of silicone,” Dr. Becker says. “Although available overseas, The FDA has not approved it as of yet in the United States, but it will be an incredible advancement for breast augmentation.”
