By manipulating the width and height of your teeth with veneers and crowns, your dentist may be able to enhance your facial contours, reducing the appearance of saggy skin, wrinkles and nasolabial folds. “Cosmetic dentistry can easily take at least 10 years off your appearance,” says New York City cosmetic dentist Kenneth Fishman, DDS. Adds New York City cosmetic dentist Timothy Chase, DMD, “The quality of porcelain is so much better today than in the past, making it hard to tell what cosmetic work, if any, someone had done.” The procedure involves building out the teeth and restoring their shape to support the underlying muscles. “As we get older, muscles that hold the face begin to wear, causing the lower face to sink in,” says New York City cosmetic dentist Irwin Smigel, DDS. “When this happens, the distance between the nose and chin gets shorter. By building up the teeth, we can lift up the cheeks to create the appearance of a chiseled bone structure, make the front teeth wider and thicker to create poutier lips, and add dimension to the back part of the smile to lift the jowls.” The results are permanent and continue to improve for up to a year because of an increased blood supply to the muscles. “Like any muscle, the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets. Such is true for the muscles that support the smile,” says Dr. Irwin Smigel.
