Risks

The most common side effect from teeth whitening using a laser or light-accelerated procedure or bleaching product is tooth sensitivity.  However, there are other known side effects to be aware of:

• Chemical burns from gel bleaching (if a high-concentration oxidizing agent contacts unprotected tissues, which may bleach or discolor mucous membranes)
• Over-bleaching or a “bleached effect” from intensive treatments
• Pain if you have “sensitive teeth” caused by open dentinal tubules
• Increased risk of tongue cancer
