Glossary

Macrolane

A breast and body-contour filler marketed as a less invasive alternative to surgical breast enlargement, offering an increase of one cup size through injections that only take between 30 and 90 minutes. The treatment involves injecting stabilized hyaluronic acid into the breast, buttock or other areas, and then molding to the desired shape. The benefits are that it requires only a local anesthetic and will leave no scarring, although bruising, swelling and discomfort for a few days are expected. The effect however, only lasts for 12 months, after which further injections are required.

Medical Tourism

The practice of traveling abroad or across borders to seek better quality health care (doctors, equipment, and facilities), as well as a better value for treatments (such as surgery and specialist procedures).

Mesotherapy

A minimally invasive procedure that is widely used in Europe and elsewhere to treat various injuries and medical conditions, mesotherapy targets problem areas with microinjections, or “medicinal bullets” of conventional or homeopathic medicines, vitamins, minerals and amino acids delivered directly into the mesoderm (middle layer of skin). Among its many applications, mesotherapy can be used to eliminate cellulite, promote weight loss, provide anti-aging benefits and to eliminate localized fat deposits.

Microdermabrasion

Facial exfoliation procedure in which the top layer of skin is abraded away with ultrafine crystals of aluminum oxide or other ingredients. Improves and smoothes skin surface and can minimize imperfections like blemishes, fine lines, and signs of sun damage.

Mid-facelift

Focuses on a triangular area formed between the two corners of the eyes and the corner of the mouth. By working on the face’s deeper layers, the surgeon can reposition the underlying fat and the actual muscles, so that the middle of the face is pulled up and looks more natural. It also takes the tension off the flesh. A mid-facelift can be performed in the doctor’s office in as little as an hour.

Mini Facelift

This quick and safe procedure, for middle-aged people whose skin has lost elasticity, involves very small incisions to correct problem areas of the face. The mini facelift is one of the least invasive procedures in facial surgery that is undertaken with minimal risk. A general anesthetic is not always required and the recovery time is shorter.

Mini Tummy Tuck

While a full tummy tuck involves an incision around the navel and across the lower abdomen, a mini tummy tuck leaves the navel intact and requires a smaller incision. Liposuction is sometimes used to remove fat below the navel, tightening muscles from the navel to the pubis. It is less invasive and can be done on an outpatient basis. This is recommended for patients that are within 10 percent of their ideal body weight.

Mommy Makeover

A combination of surgical procedures that commonly includes a breast lift or augmentation and a tummy tuck to restore a woman’s body back to its pre-pregnancy shape. Best performed three to six months after delivering and once breastfeeding is complete. It’s advised for women who are finished having children.

MyoScience

This company is known for developing a hand-held medical device and procedure to relax facial muscles that cause wrinkles like frown lines between the brow, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. The company sees it as a possible alternative to Botox, which requires injection of a toxin.
