A new technology, known as cryolipolysis, is allegedly able to reduce fat with cold instead of heat. Currently, clinical trials are being conducted by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University on 200 obese Americans. The trials are assessing the fat under the skin on the thighs, abdomen and back to determine if cold is able to break down fat stored in fat cells. Cryolipolysis is a noninvasive procedure that places a plate-like device directly onto the skin. The plate is rapidly cooled and fat is purportedly reduced at around minus one degree Celsius after the plate has been in contact with the skin for five to 20 minutes. A natural inflammatory process occurs, removing the dead fat cells over time and reducing the amount of fat in the body. As of press time, cryolipolysis is not yet available in the United States.
