About Me

Patient Testimonial

“Today I am smiling with confidence. I also receive compliments about my smile all the time.”

—Laura Wilkinson, Olympic Gold Medalist for 10 Meter Platform Diving and patient of Dr. Lewis

Custom Design

Unhappy with her short-looking teeth, this 25-year-old patient sought advice. "We performed gum contouring to even out the gum line and lengthen teeth and then placed 10 upper, minimal prep G. Lewis veneers to fill in gaps," Dr. Lewis says. "The G. Lewis veneers helped create a more beautiful smile without the need for temporary restorations."

Smile Satisfaction

A recipient of many awards, such as “Houston Top Doc in Cosmetic Dentistry,” a peer-reviewed accolade received 10 years in a row, Dr. Lewis is a proponent of “cutting-edge offerings.” Always looking to expand his horizons, Dr. Lewis—a regular on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube—incorporates high-tech adjunct services to further enhance his patients’ experience. He developed no-prep, stain-resistant G. Lewis Veneers in conjunction with da Vinci Dental Studios® (the same lab used on ABC’s Extreme Makeover). The veneers are contact-lens thin and, in many cases, can be placed without filing down patients’ teeth, yielding a very natural aesthetic.

Custom Smile Makeover

Unhappy with her gummy smile and short, discolored teeth, this 56-year-old patient came to Dr. Lewis from out of state seeking a brighter, more youthful smile. "We performed a smile makeover that included gum contouring to even out her gum line, as well as porcelain crowns and no-prep G. Lewis Veneers, which created a beautiful, natural-looking smile," says Dr. Lewis.

Custom Design

Unhappy with her short-looking teeth, this 25-year-old patient underwent gum contouring to even out her gum line and 10 upper, non-prep G. Lewis veneers to fill in gaps for a new smile.

Overall Aesthetic Improvement

To enhance the appearance of her tetracycline-stained teeth that had been severely worn down due to grinding, this patient underwent a smile lift with veneers for a total smile makeover.

Custom Design

Unhappy with her spaces and discolored teeth, this 49-year-old patient sought advice from Dr. Lewis. "We performed gum contouring to even out her gum line, minimally prepared her teeth and placed G. Lewis Veneers to close the spaces, which helped create a beautiful and natural-looking smile without the need for temporary restorations," says Dr. Lewis.

FAQ's

Q. How much can tooth contouring change my smile?

What our experts say:

You can get a dramatic change from tooth contouring depending on the situation. If you have pointy teeth and you don’t want that or if you have uneven teeth, it’s amazing what tooth contouring can do for your smile.

Q. Can a gum lift erase my gummy smile and how much will it hurt?

What our experts say:

I wouldn’t say it’s painless. It can be uncomfortable but usually it’s more of a tenderness for a few days to a week that can be managed with Advil. I would say it has mild to moderate discomfort. It can give dramatic results.

Q. Can a smile makeover help me look younger?

What our experts say:

When we’re doing veneers and full mouth reconstruction, we’re often doing something called opening the bite where we restore it to how it was before they ground their teeth down and lost the vertical height in the lower third of the face. I call it a smile lift. What were doing is building the teeth up to support the face for a more youthful look.

Q. What are the advantages of no-prep veneers?

What our experts say:

The obvious advantage is that you don’t have to remove any of the enamel, so your teeth are not altered. Some people like the security of knowing that if something were to happen in the future, then they could have them taken off and it would be like they had never done anything to their teeth. It’s more conservative, which patients like. I developed my own type of no-prep veneers called G. Lewis Veneers, and I did that because there are others on the market that I didn’t feel looked very good. So I developed these to be more lifelike and precise. I was concerned about them being too bulky, but when I committed to creating G. Lewis Veneers, I was surprised at how thin we could make them.

Q. When do you need crowns instead of veneers?

What our experts say:

If someone has a large filling or broken down tooth, sometimes a crown is a better option. Or if it’s way out of alignment and the upper and lower teeth don’t touch, you can use a crown to help fix the bite. If the teeth have had root canals, the teeth might need to be crowned because they tend to be more brittle, but not all the time. For the back teeth, I would definitely recommend a crown if they have had root canals.

Q. What is the difference between a home teeth whitening kit and one provided by a dentist?

What our experts say:

The ingredients of the whiteners you get at the dentist office are the highest concentrations of the active ingredients, which is more efficient in changing the color of the teeth. They work better and will give you a better result, but I will say that over-the-counter whitening products do work. They just take a lot longer. Crest Whitestrips for example work; however, they don’t cover all of the teeth, which is one drawback. On the other hand, some patients come in because they didn’t get the result they wanted from over-the-counter whiteners. What’s good about going to the office is that the dentist can monitor the treatment and make sure it’s done safely.

Q. With a porcelain crown, does the color stay forever?

What our experts say:

The porcelain itself is not going to change colors, but it’s kind of like eating on fine china. If you eat blueberry pie on fine china, the plate is going to look stained but if you wash it off, then the stain will go away. So when people notice crowns or veneers getting yellower, it really just stains building up on the surface. If they have them professionally polished, then they can restore the color and luster. However, the tooth underneath can get darker with age and that can show through the thin veneers. It’s not something we see a lot, but we have seen it.

Q. What’s the best way to get a natural-looking smile?

What our experts say:

You can get a natural-looking smile through many different treatments. Veneers can look very natural, but going too white may make them look less natural. I find that a patient’s preference is sometimes a matter of geography. My patients in Texas tend to want their teeth whiter than people do in other parts of the country. However, whiter teeth do make you look younger so you have to find the shade that fits your goals.

Q. I have a crown and have detected a small black spot in the middle of the crown - if not a cavity then what?

What our experts say:

a black spot in the middle of the crown most likely means that the crown is a porcelain to metal crown and that the metal is exposed in that spot.  This ususally happens when there is not enough space between the top and bottom teeth and the dentist ahd to grind off the porcelain to adjust the bite.  This often happens when not enough tooth structure is removed during preparation of the tooth for the crown.

Q. Have you heard of myofunctional therapy working with the appliance to stabliize the muscles?

What our experts say:

Myofunctional therapy can be an useful adjunct to appliance therapy as it helps the muscles relax and adjust to the new placement of the teeth and jaw.  It is also helpful to break some scar tissue in muscles that can form in cases of severe bruxism or some other form of bite problems.

Q. Can veneers be replaced?

What our experts say:

Yes, veneers can be replaced.  It is a very good idea to replace them when there is gum ressesion and food trapping as these conditions can lead to gum problems and even catavities forming.  New veneers, placed properly can keep the mouth healthy and clean.
