Philosophy

Providing one-on-one experiences and personally engineering services that deliver natural, healthy smiles are all part of Dr. Swati Agarwal’s personalized approach to cosmetic dentistry. “I’ve made it my mission to perfect my skills in the area of advanced cosmetic dental procedures,” says Dr. Agarwal. Her dental practice emphasizes comfort, privacy, quality of care and aesthetics that are uniquely tailored to each individual. “I believe each patient is unique in their needs, and therefore requires a customized approach,” adds the dentist. Her focus is on the well-being of her patients, educating them on their dental health and promoting preventive care. It’s this combination of skill and comprehensive care that keeps her loyal patients coming back for all of their aesthetic dental needs.

About My Practice:

What innovative services do you offer?

I perform laser gum contouring, whereby I use a laser to redefine the outline of patients’ teeth, in addition to state-of-the-art dental implant procedures.

What is your goal for each patient you treat?

My goal is to help people keep their own teeth, for life.

Why is it so important for patients to care for their smiles?

A smile is one of the first things people notice about you. A beautiful, healthy mouth leads to improved self- confidence, giving you the courage to start a conversation, smile more and be more outgoing.

What role does technology play in your patient care?

I use laser, air abrasion and ultrasound devices that allow me to offer the most advanced noninvasive options to my patients. Lasers can recontour and reshape soft tissues, giving patients their desired ideal smiles. Air abrasion procedures can be used to minimize or eliminate tooth structure removal, which allows me to bond veneers to the patient’s enamel, making them stronger and longer-lasting. These techniques fit well with my philosophy of very conservative, very minimal cosmetic dental procedures. I can create my patient’s vision no matter how small or large their concerns may be.

About Me:

Which awards mean the most to you?

I received the 2010 Bay Area Top Doctors & Dentists award, and therefore got to appear on NBC Bay Area television's doctors improving healthcare show. It was a very memorable moment.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I love sharing in the “Wow I look great!” moment every time a client looks at what we’ve done with their teeth. I am a steward of dental health; I treat my client’s teeth like I treat my own and maintain their beautiful smile.

In what way is less more?

I have always believed that less can be more, and therefore employ a very conservative approach to restoring the smile. In particular, Invisialign is a great way to shift the teeth into proper alignment, without using metal braces, which can be uncom- fortable and interrupting to one's daily lifestyle. In terms of veneers, i offer a 'no-prep' alternative to conventional restorations, so as to avoid filing down the teeth. Above all else, my goal is for patients to look natural, with teeth that look like they belong. With my approach, there's no reason every- body can't have a beautiful smile. We're all deserving and it's within everyone's reach.

About Me

A Straighter, Brighter Smile

This patient was unhappy with her open bite, chipped front teeth and cracked back molars. Invisalign and veneers improved the appearance of her smile, and Sinsational Smile™ brightened it.

A Healthy New Smile

This patient wanted to improve tooth function and discoloration. In order to enhance his smile, Dr. Hamsayeh used Invisalign and Sinsational Smile to give him a healthier, brighter smile.

Rejuvenating Restoration

This 50-year-old patient was constantly in front of the public and was unhappy with his cracked, decayed and discolored smile. Dr. Hamsayeh performed a smile makeover using gum and bone grafts, Invisalign, dental implants, crowns and veneers.

High-Tech Treatments

“Being technologically advanced and privy to new equipment allows me to offer a variety of options to my patients,” says Dr. Hamsayeh. Aware that time is of the essence with many patients, she is pleased to offer CEREC® technology that enables her to perform single-treatment crown and veneer procedures. “We are distinctive because we are constantly evolving our techniques and services. During treatment, patients can watch a movie while the CEREC® machine turns what used to be a multi-visit treatment into a short, single visit.” Also available at Dr. Hamsayeh’s practice are cutting-edge dental lasers. “I incorporate lasers into my procedures to help reduce post-treatment discomfort, minimize the risk of infection and help aid in the restoration of new, beautiful smiles,” says Dr. Hamsayeh, who most recently added oral sedation to her selection of services. “Patients can pop just one pill and sleep while I get to work on making their smiles more glamorous. When they awake, they have no recollection of the experience—only the fact that they now have a sexier smile.”

Being Acknowledged For Who You Are

This patient was self-conscious about her broken, decayed and eroded teeth. “We gave her upper and lower custom temporaries, which allowed her to test-drive her new smile and properly heal her teeth and gums,” says Dr. Hamsayeh.

A Lighter, Brighter Smile

Unhappy with the appearance of her front teeth and a dark tooth, this 42-year-old patient sought Dr. Hamsayeh, who placed four anterior veneers and performed in-office whitening.

Event-Ready Aesthetic

Unhappy with her cracked, worn and yellow teeth, this 54-year-old patient finally took action in preparation for a special event. With a shorter time frame to work with, the patient didn’t want to do orthodontic treatment, which alone would not have been enough to fix her smile. “By using a combination of techniques, in just three visits, I was able to give her the smile she has always wanted,” Dr. Hamsayeh says.

Rejuvenating Replacement

Missing her four front teeth since she was 8, this 32-year-old patient had been using an unsightly denture to fill the space. Previous attempts for bone grafting and dental implants had failed. However in four visits over two months, Dr. Hamsayeh gave her the smile of her dreams with the combination of a bridge and veneers.

A New and Improved Smile

This 51-year-old patient suffered a collapsed bite and worn, crooked, chipped teeth. In-office whitening and eight anterior veneers created a new, natural-looking smile.

Personalized Treatments

Dr. Hamsayeh’s personalized dental boutique emphasizes comfort, privacy, quality of care and aesthetics that are uniquely tailored to each individual. “I combine precision and artistry with the latest dental technology and state-of-the-art procedures to create custom smile rejuvenation for my patients,” says Dr. Hamsayeh. “My staff and I enjoy giving patients the opportunity to ‘test drive’ their potential smiles using customized models that replicate their desired goal. FAQ's

Q. How does fixing the teeth give you fuller lips?

What our experts say:

There are many ways to add fullness to your lips either through veneers, orthodontic treatment which again will enhance and push up the teeth and create a more attractive, fuller smile.

Q. Who is the best candidate for Sensational Smiles?

What our experts say:

Honestly, anyone with tetracycline staining, deep hard staining, or anyone with defects in their enamel wouldn’t be candidate for this, but they can use other processes such as veneers or crowns which will help achieve a beautiful healthy smile.

Q. Will whitening the teeth cause tooth sensitivity?

What our experts say:

The sensational smile does not have any sensitivity associated it with.  I've used it on my most sensitive patients and have found it to be highly effective.

Q. Do over-the-counter whitening strips work?

What our experts say:

I’ve seen them work on some patients, but it takes a long while for them to work so the patients have to keep using them which gets pretty expensive. It does work on patients with bigger or longer teeth. They are inconvenient, but if it works for you, and you don’t mind spending money, it’s an option.  An alternative option is the sensational white system, a 20 minute process that can be done after your cleaning, it costs under $200 and is a wonderful option right before a special event or even when you want to perk up your smile.

Q. How are veneers put on? Do you need to alter my natural teeth?

What our experts say:

Altering the teeth is not necessary in all cases. How we prepare the teeth depends on how much room there is, how they fit together and inclination of the teeth. Depending on what lab is used, it usually take a two to three  appointments, so  it can take a week to three weeks, based  on what the patient is having done. Typically, we see about a one week turnaround, with two office visits. But you can pay a rush fee and get them quicker.

Q. What is a composite filling used for?

What our experts say:

They are used for taking care of decay on the teeth (to fill cavities). It’s used to bond and pull the tooth together. Silver used to be used for fillings, but it separates over time and release mercury with is toxic. Now, they have new composite fillings with fluoride in them; and the crystal size is much smaller, so they don’t expand and shrink which gives a nice, cosmetic, even-toned smile.

Q. What are inlays and onlays?

What our experts say:

They are great because for larger cases of decay where they cover and protect the surface of teeth that were hollowed out. They are a one-piece porcelain material that doesn’t expand or shrink. They get bonded to the tooth so they support the tooth by covering it, while the adhesive provides protection to the tooth. Inlays and onlays are the best thing to use for back teeth because of grinding and clenching forces. They last longer. Other things like composite fillings wouldn’t be as strong because of the forces being placed on them.

Q. When would you need a porcelain fixed bridge?

What our experts say:

If you are missing teeth and don’t have enough bone or if you have an issue health wise that compromises you and you can’t have bone transplanted, than a fixed bridge would be a better alternative. Or, if the teeth on either side of the space already have crowns, than it’s a simpler process than going through implant surgery.

Q. How long does it take to make a Snap-On Smile?

What our experts say:

Usually it takes two to three weeks to get it back from lab, but it can be rushed in a week.

Q. How do you fix a “gummy smile”?

What our experts say:

It depends. Orthodontically, we can extrude the teeth, which is less invasive. Or we can use laser surgery to remove excess gum. We can enhance their smile by using veneers or crowns to fix the length of their teeth, fix cracks, etc.

Q. I just broke my front tooth that had a crown on to the roots. What are my options to restore it? Is an implant the only option I have? Thank you

What our experts say:

An implant is not your only option. Depending on whether the adjacent teeth have crowns or not another option would be a conventional bridge. If you already have existing crowns on both sides of your broken tooth this is an alternative to extraction and implant placement. The draw back to a conventional bridge in this situation is that you would not be able to floss as you do with your other teeth. If you have good supporting structure (bone and soft tissue) placing an

implant is a nice predictable esthetic treatment. Hope that helps...

Q. What is the difference between bonding and veneers? What do they correct? When should each be used?

What our experts say:

They are a nice way to fix chipped teeth non-invasively; however, bonding can’t fix teeth with vertical fractures in them.  Bonding is a less permanent way to fix the teeth, you usually only get 3 to 5 years with them, but it’s a quick fix with one dental visit. Veneers are now thin and can last from 5 to 20 years, so they are a more of a permanent solution and provide a more protective structure for teeth because it covers the whole tooth so the nerves are protected.  Bonding does stain where veneers don’t.

Q. What are crowns and when are they used? Do you need to alter my natural teeth?

What our experts say:

Crowns are used when you have a large area of the tooth that’s compromised in structure (more than half the tooth). They help provide circumferential support of the tooth, and are used as a protective coating for brittleness and cracking in the teeth after root canals.

Q. What are dental implants and when are they used?

What our experts say:

Implants are the best solution to any sort of space or gap in the mouth. They are a natural replacement for your own tooth, and they don’t compromise the structure or integrity of the teeth next to them.  Just like your own teeth, you can brush and floss like you would normally do. You have to have adequate bone. We do a 3D scan and determine the placement for the implant, if everything is normal, than it’s a one- to two-step appt. But, if the patient doesn’t have enough bone, than they need a healing period of 4 to 6 months for a bone graft of their own bone (from the mandible or chin) or an artificial bone (the artificial graft takes 6 months to a year). After that, it takes a couple of visits.

Q. What is a Snap-On Smile? Who is a good candidate?

What our experts say:

It’s an acrylic replication of your own teeth. It looks like you have your own teeth, snaps on to your own teeth and doesn’t cover the gums, but it’s appliance you take in and out of your mouth. It’s used for patients that are healing from bone enhancement, or for someone who wants a nicer smile for a special occasion, and there is not enough time or they can’t afford to go through the veneer process. We can design a Snap-On Smile to look like the veneers they are going to get, to see if they like it and if the bite is alright. It can also act as a space maintainer while someone is waiting for implants. It provides a longer-term way of temporizing when waiting for implants. It does give patients the feeling of their own teeth, it just looks better. They can eat with them and then take them out and clean them with an antibacterial solution you place in your teeth. It helps prevent the decay of your own teeth. You can sleep with it, but you do have to clean it after you eat and sleep.

Q. Who is a good candidate for Invisalign?

What our experts say:

They best candidates are those that have a narrow arch with lots of crowding, or those who have a wide arch with lots of spacing; but that doesn’t eliminate others from being good candidates. It’s case by case. We take impressions, send them off and evaluate. Most adults can do it. It takes anywhere from 6 to 18 months for results, depending on how big the problem is. They now have new technology where they are placing better attachments and memory in the tray themselves which is shortening treatment time.

Q. I have a crown and have detected a small black spot in the middle of the crown - if not a cavity then what?

What our experts say:

Depends on what type of crown it is. If it is a porcelain fused to metal crown-it might be the metal showing(small chip), it might be a imperfection in the porcelain allowing staining to get embeded. If it is a Gold crown or pure porcelain crown there may be a hole in it and in fact there probably is decay. Either way you should have your Dentist take a look and investigate further. To a Healthy Beautiful Smile...Dr Hamsayeh

Q. Have you heard of myofunctional therapy working with the appliance to stabliize the muscles?

What our experts say:

Yes I have. This treatment relaxes the muscles and effects the way your teeth meet up after the stabilization process is complete. You need to be very careful as this treatment has a limited success rate. This treatment may also involve alot of stabilization care.

Q. Can veneers be replaced?

What our experts say:

Absolutely Veneers can be replaced. They can very carefully be removed and reprepped. After decay removal and soft tissue repositioning ( ideal even gum sculpting is completed) the new Veneers can be designed. If these steps are completed your new Veneers will look even prettier than the first ones. The technology for porcelains has advanced and your teeth will look even more Natural, Beautiful and Healthy.

Q. What is the best way to whiten teeth?

What our experts say:

I used to use Sapphire for whitening, but have switched over to a 20 minute process called Sensational Smiles—a 20 minute in-office whitening process that’s really inexpensive (it’s under $200). The patient has their teeth cleaned, applies a little vitamin E to their lips, puts on protective goggles and gets a snooba (a tray designed after a snorkel) that is impregnated with whitening material. It uses a light to activate the product that does not emit UV rays, so it does not over-dry the teeth which is healthier. The light is very localized.  A Timer goes off and they rinse and go.  The patient then gets a brush-style applicator to use for 10 days at home to brush on their teeth at night. They stick the tray in their mouth for 20 minutes, to make sure it stays on their teeth, and then they spit it out and go to bed.  Patients must stay away from dark liquids for a week or so. It’s amazing and can be used on supersensitive patients because there is no soft tissue damage because there is no UV light. The process gets teeth 5 to 16 shades lighter, depending on your teeth. The nice part about this process is that you can come in for a cleaning, stay for 20 minutes afterwards and leave with really white teeth because there is no waiting for custom trays; and you can keep it up every 6 months.

Q. Is in-office bleaching more effective than at-home custom whitening treatments?

What our experts say:

In-office, we can use a much stronger bleach. It’s actually the strength or concentration of the bleach that whitens the teeth, not the laser. The laser just heats up the bleach, which may make it a little more efficient. Over -the-counter products can only contain a 7 percent concentration; we give 10 to 16 percent to take home and use 45 percent in-office.

Q. I'm a working woman and want straighter teeth. Is Invisalign something that will make me look childish?

What our experts say:

As a working woman you will run into a lot of people who have opted to enhance their smile with Invisalign®. Invisalign® is the safest and best way to achieve a straightened and healthier smile for an adult. Wearing Invisalign® trays is definitely not childish. This process is mostly for adult teeth that require slow and precise movements. Children’s metal braces on the other hand work, because of their rapid movement of teeth.

About Dr. Swati Agarwal
About Me

About My Practice

FAQ
