Breast reduction pros and cons

Most surgeons make sure to explain to their breast reduction patients that they will have scarring, and some may have a decreased chance of breastfeeding or nipple sensation. However, many women feel these possible downsides are a fair trade-off, as excessively large breasts can cause pain, self-consciousness and clothing problems.

If you’re considering breast reduction surgery, you can expect breast fat and tissue to be removed through an incision around the areola, vertically down from the areola to the breast crease, or horizontal at the breast crease. Sometimes a combination of these incisions is needed to properly sculpt the breast into a smaller shape.

The nipple, which usually remains attached to the nerve and blood supply, is repositioned, overall breast skin is reduced, and areola size is proportionally reduced.
