There are various facial procedures that can make you look years younger, but undergoing one of these surgeries without also treating your hands could mean inadvertently revealing your age nevertheless.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons conducted a study to deduce just how age-revealing one’s hands can be. Participants were asked to examine photos of female hands and guess the woman’s age. With the majority of the photos, participants estimated accurately. They were also shown altered images, where veins and blemishes were removed, and they guessed the modified hands belonged to younger women.

Surgeons believe this proves that prominent veins and age spots on the hands can detract from a revitalized face. “Looking younger after your facelift or eyelid surgery can conflict with aged hands that simply do not match the face,” said Dr. Roxanne Guy, former ASPS president. “After the face, hands are the second most visible, telltale sign of one’s age. If your goal is to look more youthful or you are bothered by the appearance of your hands, you may seriously want to consider hand rejuvenation.”

There are a number of treatment options, included lasers, sclerotherapy, and fat injections. Additionally, the study showed that there a few quick fixes: participants incorrectly guessed that moisturized hands with manicured nails and jewelry belonged to younger women.
