There are so many fitness bloggers taking over our social media feeds, but some stand out from the crowd more than others. These two healthy lifestyle enthusiasts—Karena and Katrina, founders of Tone It Up—fit into that category. They are genuinely excited about staying fit and eating healthy and their energy radiates, which is evident in their community of followers. Between workouts, recipe-making and holiday parties, they found time to chat with me about how they met and why their message is so important, as well as share some of their favorite tips to living a fabulous, healthy life.

NewBeauty: How did you both meet and what inspired you to start Tone It Up?
Karena: I’ve had a passion for fitness since I was very young. I would watch my mom work out to Jane Fonda VHS tapes in the living room and dream of doing that one day. I also ran my first half marathon at 12 years old. Life happened and fitness was not in the forefront for many years, but as an adult I got into triathlons and the fitness buzz got ignited again! Katrina and I met at the gym! I was coming in a lot to train for a race and an upcoming shoot and she was a trainer there.
Katrina: I grew up a heavy kid and I decided to make a change. When I was a teenager, I started working out and getting an interest in reading books on health and fitness. Now I have a degree in health science! Getting healthy really impacted both of our lives, so we wanted to share our knowledge and also create a community of women that would support each other through our journey to wellness.
NB: What is the Tone It Up program and how does it work?
Katrina: Tone It Up is a lifestyle! As a member, you get thousands of recipes to satisfy any craving you may have. We literally have healthy donut, cake and cookie recipes. We also have challenges (like the upcoming Tone It Up Challenge starting January 1) to take your nutrition and fitness to the next level!
NB: What is your number-one eating healthy tip during the holidays?
Karena: Always pregame your holiday party with a big green salad! It’ll help keep you from snacking on unhealthy foods. We like to mix up 3 cups kale, 2 tbsp. walnuts, 1/4 cup cooked quinoa, 1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar, and 2 tsp. olive oil.
Katrina: We also like to bring a healthy option to holiday parties!
NB: What is your workout style?
Katrina: We like to add in all different types of workouts to keep the body guessing. You’ll definitely see high intensity interval training, fine toning, yoga, strength training, and cardio. The more variety, the better your body will respond and build sexy, lean muscle.
NB: How do you motivate your followers to stay focused in their routines and not give up?
Karena: By following the Tone It Up lifestyle ourselves! We believe that the biggest inspiration is to have an entire team by your side, backing you up. So during challenges, we follow the workouts and do the meal plans with the #TIUteam and share it on Instagram.
NB: How much of weight loss is diet and what how much is fitness?
Katrina: We always say that abs are made with your Tone It Up workouts and revealed with your Tone It Up Nutrition Plan. You can’t have one without the other when trying to increase your fitness. While working out, your body needs certain nutrients to build lean muscle and reveal your toned bod!
NB: What fitness trends can we expect to see in 2017?
Karena: Definitely social fitness. We strongly believe that meeting up with your girls and working out helps keep you accountable…and it’s fun! It’s how Kat and I stay accountable too!
